This is where I work :)

Hi!
My name is Kristina and I work as a vocational studies teacher at an upper secondary high school. Mostly I teach everything about horses, how to feed them, how to take care of them and so on, but I also have for example a course where we teach the students how to drive a tractor. Very fun! The education is three years and after these three years the students gets a vocational qualifications exam as a groom. We are between ten to twelve teachers at the school and we have about 70 students totally. The school is located about 30 kilometers from Gothenburg and the name of the city is Kungsbacka. These two photos show the front of the stable and the houses where the students live.

    1. Yes it is, but there are some problems with that too actually. They are so young when they move and some of them cannot take the responsibility that needs to take. For example, some of them have no discipline to do their home works and I think they often go to bed very late so in the morning they often are very tired. Do you have any good advice about that? Do you have any activities at your campus?

    2. We hade some rules about when they have to go to bed but I think that they ignore that.....We try to let them do as much as possible in the daytime and we have lessons twice a week called "studiegård" where they can make their homework.

  2. Hi Kristina

Do all of the students live on campus, or do some also travel to the school from their homes?

    1. Hi Jackie!
They can get different kind of jobs. Some of them don’t work with horses after school, they just have study our education because they love horses and like, more want them as a hobby.
Many of them gets good work contacts when they have their internship and start to work as a groom directly after the graduation. Some of them work in another country after school, mostly in Germany, Netherlands and Denmark.
Many of them also go to different University after school. There are a lot of job they can find, unfortunately is it difficult to get good jobs as a Groom whit good salary. Often they work a lot (many hours) and the work is hard.
      How is it in Australia?

  4. Hi Kristina

Can you tell me more about the internship? How long does it last for? What work do you do with the students before, during, and after the internship so that they get the most out of the time that they are there?

  5. Hi Susanne!
The students have totally 15 weeks internship, they do 4 weeks the first year, 6 weeks the second year and 5 weeks the third year. Most of them practice as grooms in different kind of stables. But they can also do their internship in a cow stables or with a veterinary.
We are two who works with this. Before the internship we give the students information’s about how it can be at different places. They have to write a personal letter to the preceptor before they arrive to the place. Before the students arrive to the different places we also have to visit and check them so we know that it is good places to be. The internship is related to different courses and when the student do their internship they also get homework’s so they reflect over what they do and also what they can bring back to school and tell their friends. After the internship they do an evaluation about the place. Very good for us to get so we know if it is a good place to recommend to other students and of course a good thing to do so the students reflect over what they have done.
