Hi Lena, Rats only live to about 2-3 years. We have very strong animal ethics procedures at our workplace and so therefore we can only use the animals once for these types of procedures. They are the old animals. When the animals are young the students use them for handling classes where students learn how to handle and hold them correctly and how to sex them correctly. After this they are used for breeding classes where the students will set up breeding pairs and will monitor the pregnancy, parturition and growth of the young.
